How To De-winterize A Travel Trailer

A little late I know but I’ve found this question getting asked fairly often as of late, “How do I de-winterize my Travel Trailer?. It’s a great question with an easy answer…so lets answer it! We are going to be going through step by step on how to de-winterize your travel trailer starting with…

Step 1: Filling the Fresh Water Tank

To start you’ll want to locate the fresh water tank and remove the cover. Then attach a hose to a water source and fill the tank about one-third of the way. While the tank is filling, ensure that all drains on the bottom of the trailer are closed to prevent any water from leaking.

Step 2: Activating the Water Pump

Once the tank is partially filled, turn on the water pump inside your trailer. This step allows the water pump to start working. As you wait for the pump to activate, open the outdoor shower to release any remaining air from the system.

Step 3: Checking the Hot Water Tank

Move to the outside and locate the hot water tank. Ensure that the drain plug is securely attached. Use a socket to tighten the drain plug and prevent any leaks.

Step 4: Resetting the Valves

Inside your trailer, locate the valves near the hot water tank. Reset these valves to the open position to allow water flow. Typically, the valves are positioned behind the hot water tank, they’re pretty easy to find.

Step 5: Draining the Antifreeze

Activate the water pump switch and go to each faucet inside your trailer. Run the water until the pink antifreeze is completely replaced with clear water from the tank. This step ensures that all the antifreeze is flushed out of the system.

Step 6: Connecting to City Water

Once the antifreeze is drained, connect your trailer to a city water source. Attach a hose to the city water connection and ensure it is securely fastened. Turn on the water to flush all the lines throughout the trailer.

Step 7: Draining the Outside Shower

To remove any remaining antifreeze from the system, open the water in the outside shower. Run the hot and cold water until clear water is flowing, indicating that the system is fully flushed.

Step 8: Clearing Water Fixtures Inside the RV

Visit each water fixture inside your trailer, such as faucets, toilets, and showers. Run the water until it flows clear from each fixture. This step ensures that all water lines are of antifreeze.

Step 9: Unbypassing the Hot Water Tank

Return to the hot water tank, located outside the trailer. Remove the cover and check the valves. Adjust the valves to the open position, allowing water to flow into the tank. This step ensures that the hot water tank is functioning properly.

Step 10: Clearing Air from the Hot Water Tank System

As water flows into the hot water tank, you may notice some air escaping from the hot water side. This is normal and helps remove any air trapped in the system. Allow the water to flow until all the air is cleared.

By following these easy steps, you can effectively de-winterize your travel trailer all on your own! Remember to check for any leaks or issues throughout the process.
